Elephant Action League (EAL) started to support the anti-poaching and anti-trafficking activities of WARA in Guinea, ongoing despite Ebola. EAL will support training and capacity building.

Ivory traffic in Conkary affects not only the small Guinean population of elephants, but those across the African continent as well – the majority of the ivory comes from Central Africa via Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, but can come from as far away as East and Southern Africa as well.

In March 2012, WARA NGO had created the GALF project (Guinée-Application de la Loi Faunique), a replication of LAGA model for fight against wildlife crime in Guinea. GALF works in close collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Justice and INTERPOL in Guinea to bring about the effective enforcement of the laws.

Since early 2012, actions of GALF’s project have led to the arrest of 25 traffickers including Chinese citizens implicated in the traffic of chimpanzees and crocodiles, and major ivory syndicates, and separately, including the confiscation of around 1,200 ivory objects made of ivory, 10 leopard skins and 200 live animals, chimpanzees, birds, crocodiles, turtles, have been rehabilitated and released back to the wild.
