Save the Vaquita update: Important Arrests in Mexico
Earth League International’s confidential data on Totoaba Cartels from Operation Fake Gold supports the work of Mexican authorities.
After two years of sharing confidential data on wildlife traffickers with the Mexican Authorities, Earth League International is pleased to see that their Confidential Intelligence Briefs (CIB’s) has been used to support the work of Mexican law enforcement agencies, in the effort to save the vaquita from extinction.
In the past weeks, Mexican authorities have arrested several totoaba poachers and traffickers under organized crime charges against the environment. This is the first time that charges of this nature have been applied in Mexico. The traffickers arrested include Sunshine Rodríguez Peña, Juan Luis García Ruiz “La Yegua”, Luis Aldaz Valenzuela and Segundo Valenzuela.
We are extremely proud of the work done by our undercover teams and analysts during the past three years, fighting to save the Sea of Cortez from organized crime and international traffickers.
Our work is not finished though.
Earth League International urges the Mexican Government to continue prosecuting environmental organized crime and acting against Chinese traffickers residing in Mexico, who are the real drivers behind the totoaba illegal supply chain killing the vaquita.
Totoaba poaching and trafficking are the primary cause of the dwindling population of the vaquita porpoise, the world’s most endangered marine mammal, which is endemic to Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California, in the Sea of Cortez. According to scientists, less than 15 vaquita survive in the Sea of Cortez.
The Confidential Intelligence Briefs (CIB) that ELI routinely shares with several government agencies around the world, are arguably the most important piece of output from our intelligence and investigative activities. The CIB includes full names, addresses, and contact information (as available) for each Person of Interest (POI), as well as in-depth descriptions of their businesses, illegal activity, and trade network connections, including video and audio recordings.
